What is MOBIUS and how do I get books through it?

Overview

MOBIUS is the regional consortium to which Kenrick belongs, allowing Kenrick patrons to borrow from a vast collection of 30 million items at 80 different academic and public libraries across Missouri and neighboring states.  It gives you direct borrowing privileges at major research collections at Saint Louis University, Washington University, the University of Missouri System, and the Saint Louis County Public Library, among many others.  Kenrick patrons can look for and request books through MOBIUS, which will be delivered to the library office at Kenrick for pickup.  Likewise, on-site Augustine Institute patrons can have items delivered from across MOBIUS directly to the Institute campus in Florissant.

You will need a library account and PIN to request books through MOBIUS.  Follow the steps below to make your request.

Steps

1. Search: On the main search box on the library's homepage (library.kenrick.edu), enter your search terms--with quotation marks for more defined searches--and select the MOBIUS tab.  Then click "Search" to the right of the box.

2. Select: You will see a list of "hits" in response to your search terms.  Look at it carefully to ensure it is the item you need.  When you find it, click on it.  Each entry also states its format (e.g., book, audiobook, video, etc.).  As a Kenrick patron, you would only have access to books and hard copies of audiovisual content (i.e. CDs and DVDs) but not online or streaming content.

3. Place a hold (#1): After clicking on the item you need, you can see how many copies are available across MOBIUS and where they reside.  Click on "Place a hold."

4. Sign in: Then click on "Sign in."  You will need your library PIN to do so.  If you do not have a library PIN or forgot it, click on this FAQ.

5. Find your institution: You will then be prompted to select your home institution, which is where your book will be delivered.  You can either scroll through the list of MOBIUS member libraries or enter "Kenrick-Glennon Seminary" and click "Continue."  Note that all our patrons, both Kenrick and Augustine Institute patrons, need to select "Kenrick-Glennon Seminary."

6. Login with PIN: You will then be prompted to enter your email address and library PIN.  Then click on "Login:"

7. Place a hold (#2): You will be automatically taken back to the book you requested.  Click on "Place a hold" again:

8. Choose pickup location: You will see an option to select either the Augustine Institute or Kenrick-Glennon Seminary as your pickup location.  Select whichever is most appropriate and then click on "Place hold."

9. Hold has been placed: You will see confirmation that your request has been placed.  You will receive an email when the book is available for pickup either from the library office at Kenrick or the library service point at the Augustine Institute.  Delivery should be within 7 days or less, especially if the sending library is local.

Key Points

  • If you have an urgent need for a book, in less than 7 days, please let us know and we can acquire it for you.  The fastest option typically is as an e-book (in many cases, the book can be available within a day), and we can rush order print books, but that might take 2-3 days depending on availability.
  • You can borrow print books and audiovisual items such as DVDs and CDs through MOBIUS.  However, MOBIUS does not give you access to other libraries' online or streaming content, including most audiobooks or e-books.
  • You must have a Kenrick ID card to go to other MOBIUS libraries and check out books directly from them on-site.  These cards are issued automatically to Kenrick faculty.  If you are a Kenrick seminarian or an Augustine Institute affiliate and you want such a card, please contact the library at library@kenrick.edu.
  • MOBIUS items have much shorter loan periods: only 40 days and no renewals.  If an item fits Kenrick's collection parameters and we do not have it, or if it is a book you will need for an extended period, it may be best for us to buy it for you and add it to our local collection.
  • If you lose or damage a MOBIUS book, you are responsible for paying fines or replacement fees to the lending library.  Failure to pay these fees may result in a suspension of your library privileges.
